Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why does the Facebook signup need my friends list?
A: We don't really know why and wish Facebook did not provide your friends list, but no matter, we neither use nor store the information. Partly we just wouldn't do that, and partly the reputation of InterMix is at stake.

Q: How do I set up a group?
A: You will need someone who can do simple html and is not daunted by technical stuff. Contact Roger Eaton - questions@intermix.org - to get started.

Q: How can I help?
A: Participate in the UNA Gender Crosstalk by signing up here. Or contact Roger Eaton - questions@intermix.org

Q: My message has only one rating, but the summary shows decimal values. How can that be?
A: Regression to the mean is applied when comparing your message ratings to those of other messages. If your message has only a few ratings, then average ratings are included in the calculation of "value" for your message. This is done to make sure a message doesn't "win" by having just a few votes with the highest ratings.

Q: How is it that posting my "candidate" message late in a decision period makes it less likely to win?
A: If you write a good message and wait to post it until the end of the posting period, then your message will not have been rated very much when we go into the second part of the decision process, where new candidates cannot be posted. When we do that, we change the sort so the highest rated candidates are at the top instead of the newest. What is tricky here, though, is that regression to the mean is used to make sure that messages rated by only a few people do not go to the top of the list. If your message has only a few ratings, then average ratings are included in the calculation of "value" for your message. So, if you wrote a great message, but late in the process, a bunch of average ratings will bring your message's value down.
